«In Anticipation of Joy» (The Spring 2022 Kyiv Online Lecture Series on Language and Literature) by Dr. Michael Burke
This lecture series (April, May, 2022) by Professor Dr. Michael Burke (University College Roosevelt, Utrecht University, the Netherlands) celebrate the power of language, style and cognition to bring joy into the worlds of readers. The guest lectures begin with sessions on style, language and cognition in children’s literature. The first of these lookі at the work of the much-lauded British children’s writer, Julia Donaldson, and in particular at her book The Gruffalo (1999), which has been translated into many different languages, including Ukrainian. The story is about a large monster bully who tries to kill and eat a very clever, resourceful and quick-witted mouse … The lectures that follow these consider more closely the nature and processes of literary reading within a framework of children’s literacy. These lectures also look at the pleasure and emotion experienced by readers during immersed interactions with literary texts. They also look at the evolving technology of reading devices. Several studies that have been conducted by Professor Burke in recent years are presented and discussed during these lectures. One of the key themes that runs through them is that reading literature is about joy, and, in particular, about being in anticipation of joy.
